Franschhoek: This area was originally known as Olifantshoek as it was discovered by following a path created by the elephants that inhabited the area. In 1688, a number of Huguenots, French Protestant refugees, arrived in South Africa and chose to settle in this fertile valley. The area was later given the name Franschhoek, in their honour. My mom's side of the family, who are Fouries were French Houguenots, so this was very interesting to me.
